Miamisburg, Ohio - January 19, 2010: U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown visited the Mound Advanced Technology Center on
Sen. Brown meets the press, as Mayor Dick Church, Jr. and Miamisburg Mound Community Improvement Corp. President Mike Grauwelman look on. Friday, Jan. 15 for a roundtable discussion to learn how the federal government can help create clean energy jobs and how the Mound site could serve as a future campus for renewable clean energy technologies. Participating in the roundtable were regional leaders of energy industries, education and economic development.
Mound should play an important role in Ohios clean energy economy, Sen. Brown said. Already the facilities at Mound are being used to conduct cutting-edge clean energy research and house other companies in high-growth industries. By working together, we can bring new jobs and economic development to the Miami Valley.
Sen. Brown (upper right) listened to ideas about a possible Mound role in Ohios clean energy economy. Sen. Brown led a group of eight U.S. Senators who successfully advocated for increased funding for environmental clean-up projects in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. The ARRA allocates $20 million to complete the final stage of Mound cleanup this year, and the Senator also took a brief tour of that project site on his visit.
Mound is a former U.S. Department of Energy facility that produced nuclear weapons components. Since the federal government decided in 1993 to decommission the site, redevelopment activities have been conducted concurrently with environmental remediation, transforming Mound into a light industrial and technology business park.
