City launches neighborhood enhancement program Print E-mail

Miamisburg, Ohio - Aug. 2, 2017:  Last night's National Night Out event, which is designed to promote a healthy partnership between citizens and public safety professionals, also served as the launch of a new local initiative.  With support from local businesses and non-profit agencies, the City has introduced a neighborhood enhancement program in an area north of the downtown district.  Entitled “Made in Miamisburg,’ this new program is designed to partner with residents and local business owners to improve the quality of life for those who live, work and play in that area.

Initial development

Earlier this year, several members of the City’s administration team visited successful neighborhood enhancement programs in other cities in the region, witnessing the impacts of these programs and learning best practices.  After taking these site visits and reviewing a capstone project on this subject by a team from the Wright State University Masters in Public Administration program, staff then researched and evaluated several Miamisburg neighborhoods that might be suitable candidates for Made in Miamisburg.  The area selected is bounded by the Great Miami River to the west, the railroad tracks to the east, Buckeye Street to the south and the City’s Municipal Service Center to the north.

Program in action

In early July, City staff visited residents in the selected neighborhood and went door-to-door to provide first-hand information on the program and conduct a survey on community services and residential concerns.   Over 80 residents completed the survey and provided valuable feedback that was used to determine priorities moving forward.  The steps being implemented by the City in this initial effort include:
•    Block Party Program Kick-off
•    Installing complimentary smoke detectors
•    Community Garage Sale and large trash pick-up
•    Property maintenance remediation
•    Repairing sidewalks and curbs
•    Replacing street lights and street signs in poor condition
•    Painting fire hydrants
•    Landscape beautification
•    Educational programming
•    Neighborhood Watch Group monthly meetings
•    Additional street and storm drainage maintenance

Moving forward

Made in Miamisburg will bring neighbors together to address concerns and enhance quality of life.  Moving forward, the City plans to continue implementation through November and continue to monitor long term-impacts in the future.  Additionally, neighborhood enhancement will become an annual initiative that will be implemented in other neighborhoods.
