Aquatic Center to remain closed in 2020 Print E-mail

Miamisburg, Ohio - May 6, 2020:  The City of Miamisburg will keep its Sycamore Trails Aquatic Center closed in 2020.  City Manager Keith Johnson made the announcement today after reviewing the matter with the mayor and City Council at a study session last night.

The Aquatic Center is located at the corner of Heincke and Maue roads.  The decision not to open was made in response to the current COVID-19 restrictions in place across Ohio and the uncertainty about future social distancing requirements.

“This was a difficult decision for us, because we know that the facility is very popular in the community and a highlight of summer in Miamisburg,” Johnson said.  “Unfortunately, the state’s recent decision to extend its “stay-at-home” order to late May has significantly delayed our hiring and training process for the facility.  We also don’t know what kind of capacity issues might arise this summer due to social distancing requirements.  As a result of these obstacles, it just isn’t possible to have a viable season at Sycamore Trails.”

The city manager also said he wanted to make a decision as early as possible so that the City’s pool of seasonal employees has ample time to seek other employment.

The City of Miamisburg has continued providing essential services to the community throughout the cononavirus shutdown period and operate in a way that limits public contact between and among employees and citizens.  With the State of Ohio beginning to ease some restrictions in phases, the City is announcing the following decisions regarding its services in the near-term:

•    The Miamisburg Civic Center at 10 N. First Street will reopen to the public on May 11, giving residents access to the Income Tax and Utility Billing offices weekdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Other visits with staff will be by appointment only.  Enhanced disinfecting practices are being implemented, and hand sanitizer stations are in place.  Visitors may also notice barriers or office set-up changes that ensure physical separation between people.  Citizens are still encouraged to conduct as much business with the City as possible via telephone and email, and a drop box for tax returns and utility payments remains available in the Civic Center lobby.  The Miamisburg Municipal Court, located in the Civic Center, has remained open with several operating adjustments in effect.  Judge Robert Rettich III recently ordered all individuals doing business with the court to wear a face covering.  Reopening of other City facilities is expected to follow later in the month.  These decisions will be announced when they are made.
•    The upcoming Miamisburg Baseball/Softball League for youth is cancelled, and all registrants will receive full refunds.  Staff will continue working with the League’s advisory board to evaluate state safety guidelines to determine if an abbreviated schedule and/or clinics will be offered later in the summer/fall.
•    The upcoming Day Camp program has been cancelled, and all registrants will receive full refunds.  Staff will continue to evaluate state safety guidelines to determine if an abbreviated schedule of camps could be offered later in the summer/fall.
•    The City’s Sunday concert series in Riverfront Park is cancelled through July 5.  Staff will continue to evaluate state safety guidelines to determine if an abbreviated schedule of concerts will be offered later in the summer/fall.
•    PipeStone and Mound golf courses, which have been open, are now permitting use of motorized carts with enhanced sanitation and certain restrictions in place.  Questions about league play and other programming should be directed to course staff.
•    The Miamisburg Historical Society has cancelled all of its annual activities on Memorial Day weekend, and its new History Center remains closed.

“Ohioans overall have been very responsible and made it possible for the state to begin re-opening,” Johnson said.  “As our community joins in that process, citizens are sure to notice some new safety practices intended to protect them and our employees.  It’s important that everyone respect those practices.”
