The City of Miamisburg and Miami Township in 2007 jointly formed the Hillgrove Union Cemetery Board to provide oversight of Hillgrove Cemetery, which is a 30-acre facility located at 1002 E. Central Avenue in Miamisburg.

Hillgrove Cemetery was established in 1863 and is part of Miamisburg's rich heritage.  One of the City's founders, Dr. John Treon, was the first buyer of a plot and has a prominent resting place on the grounds.

Situated on rolling hills, Hillgrove provides a respectful and peaceful setting for local families of all faiths.  The cemetery grounds are open daily to visitors.  During periods of inclement weather, the grounds may be closed for safety reasons.  Cemetery plots are available for purchase.

Cemetery staff is available to assist with genealogical research on an appointment basis.  Appointments must be made at least 48 hours in advance and are subject to change due to burials and cemetery operations.

New structure added for cremation remains

Historic Hillgrove Union Cemetery on Central Avenue has added a new structure to accommodate cremation remains.

Called a columbarium, this structure has 72 individual vaults for the interment of urns.  It is the first columbarium ever at Hillgrove; urns have previously been buried underground.

“There is an increasing market for this type of service for cremations, and Hillgrove is pleased to be able to meet this increasing need,” said City Council member Mike McCabe, who is the current president of the Hillgrove board.  “There has already been a positive response in the community.”

Hillgrove is operated and supported jointly by the City of Miamisburg and Miami Township, and each jurisdiction contributed $20,000 toward the purchase of the columbarium.  The cemetery contributed $8,800.

McCabe said there is space for additional columbaria in the future if the demand warrants.  He said the intention of the board is to support any future acquisitions with the funds generated from existing structure(s) so that additional funding by the City or Township is not necessary.
