Classes are available two or four days per week, which will allow for more practice and skill mastery in between lessons. Evening lessons will occur after the facility has closed, which will allow focused participation by students.
Swim lessons are designed to teach swimming skills to people of all ages. All classes, except Adult Beginner and Diving, are progressive in that the basic skills for each class are required in order to participate in the higher level classes. Instructors are certified lifeguards employed by the City of Miamisburg.

- Due to Independence Day, Session 2 will be held Tuesday - Friday, July 6-9 and Monday-Thursday, July 12-15.
- Session 5 begins on a Thursday and will not meet on Tuesday, June 29 due to scheduled swim meets. This session will be extended to Thursday, July 15 as a result.
- Session 6 will not meet on Wednesday, July 21 due to a previously scheduled event. The session will be extended to Monday, August 9.
Basic Objectives for Learn to Swim Classes
Guppies (1 year to 3 years) : Makes water orientation safe and fun! This class will offer instruction on water exploration, bobbing, floating, gliding and basic water skills. One parent per child is required in the water during class sessions. Each class is 30 minutes.
Minnows (3 - 5 years) : This level will build on basic water comfort and skills. Learn basic skills: breath-holding, bobbing, floating and beginning arm strokes.
Tadpoles (Level I Water Exploration 5 - 7 years) : Beginning swimming skills are the focus of this class. Student will learn submerging, bobbing, supported front & back floating, kicking, basic arm action and water safety skills.
Turtles (5 - 7 years) : This level will focus on giving students success with swimming fundamentals. Breath-holding, submersion, unsupported floating, kicking, fundamental arm action, deep water orientation and water safety skills are taught.
Seahorses (5 - 8 years) : Extending on previous skills, this level will be the transition between shallow and deep water. Students will learn bobbing, introduction to diving, rhythmic breathing, front crawl, elementary backstroke and safety skills in varying depths of water.
Dolphins : Prerequisites: Seahorses
This level will focus on developing confidence in the water and with traditional swimming strokes. Deep water bobbing, rotary breathing, building stroke technique and endurance, introducing breaststroke and sidestroke, treading water and safety skills will be taught.
Sharks : Prerequisites: Dolphins
This level builds on previous levels to refine stroke mechanics and confidence. Objectives include refreshment of all previously learned strokes, underwater swimming, butterfly strokes, open turns, treading water and safety skills. Endurance will also be a focus of stroke refinement.
Manta Rays : Prerequisites: Sharks
Allow students to swim with fundamental accuracy, efficiency, power and endurance. Students will review previous strokes with added emphasis on efficiency, distance and water safety skills.
Diving :
Student must be able to demonstrate ability to swim in deep water. Students will learn to enter the water head-first, diving from the deck and diving board, and develop water confidence.
Adult Beginner (18 years and older) : Learn to swim at your own pace.

General Class Information
-Class registration size is limited to 10 students.
-Each class will have 2 lifeguard instructors; a third assistant will be added to younger levels.
-Each class has objectives to be covered and how those objectives are achieved is determined by each instructor. Each instructor brings their unique teaching styles to the class.
-Communication will be provided to parents regarding a childs progress midway through the lesson. This may be verbal or written communication from instructors.
-Each child will receive a certificate of completion that will indicate if the child is recommended to enroll in the next level or should return to the current level.
Learn to Swim Instructors
-Each head instructor is a lifeguard, certified by Ellis and Associates in CPR and first aid.
-Each instructor participates in continuing educational in-services to keep their skills sharp.
-Each instructor has received training and fulfilled several qualifications to be permitted to teach.
-Each instructor is qualified to assist your child in achieving the class objectives, participate in a group setting, and become self-assured in the water.
Cancellation Policy
The City recognizes that situations arise causing conflicts with swim lessons. Staff members will do their best to transfer registrations to another session; however, this is not always possible due to popularity of lessons. The refund/cancellation policy is on the registration form. No full refunds will be given after the refund deadlines have passed. In special circumstances, swim lesson vouchers (a gift certificate worth the value of the swim lesson) may be issued at the discretion of the Program Coordinator and/or the Aquatic Center Manager for future Learn to Swim sessions.
